Description

Raku – Art & Alchemy

Tiles – Design, Glazing and Firing

12 April 2025

9.45 am – 4 pm

Come and enjoy the design, glazing and firing of ceramic tiles through the Japanese art of Raku.

This rapid kiln firing process, originating in 16th Century Japan, inevitably brings excitement and suspense.

This workshop will offer a choice of handmade tiles, square or rectangle, with impressions, textures, or flat plain surfaces, bringing plenty of scope for your creativity.  You could, for example, create a group, or set of tiles, or otherwise they could be used as coasters.

You’ll be guided through different approaches from freestyle glazing to creating a more structured design, through the use of resist techniques, for example. The range of glazes brings a variety of tones, colours and metallic effects, finally to be revealed at the end of each Raku firing,

Also suggestions/ demonstrations on how to mount your tiles for display.

You’ll also be treated to a flavourful Japanese inspired lunch keeping your energy levels up, and taste buds tingling!

Workshop leader Andy Mason has developed his technical skills and knowledge over many years, using contemporary Raku techniques whilst sharing his enthusiasm of the process and its further practical application.

No previous experience required, just an interest and willingness to participate, and soak up the energy, art and alchemy of Raku!

Note : This is a new format workshop offered to Whistlewood members until Jan 31st at £60.00  (Full price: £77)
